LONDON, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- A strike on a suspected militant compound in Pakistan last week was the 300th U.S. drone attack in the nation's tribal region, British analysts said.
The attack Friday took place in South Waziristan Agency and killed three suspected militants, but the Bureau of Investigative Journalism said in a new report the incident was more telling because it reached a "new milestone" in the war against the Taliban and al-Qaida.
"With the U.S. emphasis shifting away from regular troops and towards covert operations, there remains a critical need for detailed scrutiny of its actions," Chris Woods, a member of the independent organization, told Pakistan's Dawn newspaper.
The report said the vast majority of the attacks occurred under President Obama's watch and have picked up in frequency to as many as one every four days.
Dawn said the group's analysis estimated 2,318 to 2,912 people had been killed in drone attacks and more than 1,100 others had been wounded. The majority of the casualties were indeed militants; however, as many as 775 innocent bystanders also died.
The United States does not comment on reported drone attacks. Woods told Dawn his group obtained information from reputable Pakistani and international media as well as sources within Waziristan.
