BAGHDAD, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A series of insurgent attacks across Baghdad left at least 22 people dead and more than 70 injured, officials said.
Two suicide attacks occurred near police stations in residential areas of the city, with shattered glass from one of the attacks injuring several children at a nearby school. In the third attack, a car bomb detonated near the airport, The New York Times reported.
A bomb was discovered at an entrance to the Interior Ministry but was disarmed before it could detonate, officials said. Two other car bombs were also discovered and disarmed.
In western Baghdad, two officers were wounded when gunmen attacked a security checkpoint.
A group that calls itself al-Qaida in Mesopotamia is suspected in the attacks. The insurgent group, which has been trying to reignite sectarian tensions, claimed responsibility for a series of attacks Aug. 15 that killed more than 80 people and wounded hundreds, the newspaper said.
