Italian police seize mob assets

REGGIO CALABRIA, Italy, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Italian police said they seized villas, a yacht and other assets from the Calabrian crime syndicate 'Ndrangheta and found a bunker fugitive bosses had used.

The Italian news agency ANSA reported the assets, seized Tuesday, belonged to the top three members of the Aquino clan -- Rocco and Giuseppe Aquino, both fugitives, and Vincenzo Tavernese, a member of one of the seven Canadian 'Ndrangheta families of Toronto.

ANSA said the bunker was found under the villa of Giuseppe Aquino, wanted since July 2010 on charges of murder and mafia association.

The seized assets also included cars, a construction company and a tourism company.

Some bank accounts and company stakes were also frozen.

The Italian authorities have been targeting mafia assets more and more as they seek to reduce the strength of organized crime.

A national agency has been set up to manage confiscated assets in Reggio Calabria and in the past year anti-mafia police have confiscated more than $271.6 million from 'Ndrangheta. It is Italy's wealthiest mafia because of its domination of the European cocaine trade, ANSA said.
