Infant survives a week without care

CHANGSHA, China, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- An infant Chinese girl whose grandmother died while holding her survived for more than a week without care in central China's Hunan Province, doctors said.

The infant, Xiao Meng, was discovered in the arms of her deceased grandmother on Sept. 27, China's Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday.

Doctors said the baby had skin infections and festering wounds as a result of being held by a decomposing corpse. She was also suffering from severe dehydration but is expected to recover.

Her parents are migrant workers who were forced to leave her in the care of her elderly grandmother.

A local party chief apologized to Xiao Meng's parents for the government's failure to take care of elderly people and children left behind by migrant relatives.
