Teen Tibetan monk self-immolates

NGABA, Tibet, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- A teenage Tibetan monk set himself alight Monday becoming the third in one week from a Ngaba monastery to self-immolate, observers say.

Kalsang, a monk said to be 17 or 18 years old from Kirti Monastery in Tibet's Ngaba County, held a picture of the Dalai Lama, set himself on fire and said: There are no religious rights and freedom in Tibet," the Free Tibet Web site reported.

Police extinguished the fire and took Kalsang away. The monk's upper body was reported to have been badly burned but his overall condition was unclear, The New York Times reported.

Ngaba, like all of Tibet, is under Chinese control and the Free Tibet Web site said no one can either enter or leave the town.

Chinese officials usually place moles within monasteries to curtail activities and report back to party officials.

Kirti Monastery monks Lobsang Kalsang and Lobsang Konchok, both between 18 and 19 years old, self-immolated on September 26, the Free Tibet Web site said.

As they died, they allegedly called for religious freedom, waved the Tibetan flag and cried, "long live the Dalai Lama."
