Violence in Kirkuk, Baghdad claim victims

BAGHDAD, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Attacks in Baghdad and Kirkuk killed at least three people and injured at least 16 others, officials in Iraq said.

An Iraqi army officer and a bodyguard were killed and three soldiers were injured Wednesday in an explosion west of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, Aswat al-Iraq reported Thursday.

"An Iraqi Army officer and one of his guards were killed, along with three soldiers injured in an explosive charge blast under their military vehicle close to Zab township," a police official in Kirkuk said.

Security officials said an Iraqi policeman was killed and another police officer was injured in an attack on an Interior Ministry vehicle northeast of Baghdad Thursday.

A security official said the unidentified gunmen escaped, Aswat al-Iraq said.

In Kirkuk, at least a dozen people were injured by a car-bomb explosion Thursday, police said.

"A booby-trapped car blew off at the center of Kirkuk city, wounding 12 persons as a preliminary result," the security official told Aswat al-Iraq.

The car was parked in a garage near a hospital, the official said.
