Rights complaint made over blackface event

MONTREAL, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- A black law student in Montreal has filed a racial abuse complaint about white business college students who staged a "blackface" skit last week.

Anthony Morgan told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. he was offended when he saw the parody Wednesday where 15 white students wearing black makeup chanted with mock Jamaican accents about smoking marijuana.

Morgan, a law student at McGill University, attended a sporting event at the Hautes Etudes Commerciales school, or "commercial high studies" and used his phone to record the skit which he posted on the YouTube site.

The video is no longer available for viewing. YouTube posted a notice saying: "This video has been removed as a violation of YouTube's policy prohibiting hate speech."

Morgan told the CBC he was filing a complaint with the Quebec Human Rights Commission.

"I thought it was too much not to say something," he said.

The HEC school issued a formal apology and said it was conducting its own investigation, the QMI Agency reported.

School spokeswoman Kathleen Grant said the Francophone students weren't aware of the controversy "blackface" makeup causes in English-speaking North America.
