Dengue fever hits Pakistan province

LAHORE, Pakistan, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The death toll from dengue fever in the Pakistani province of Punjab has reached 15, with nearly 4,000 people suffering from the virus, authorities said.

All schools in the provincial capital of Lahore have been closed for 10 days, Geo News reported Wednesday.

All private hospitals in the province have been asked not to charge dengue patients for treatment while public hospitals were put on high alert to assist dengue victims, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said.

Medicines and vaccines were being imported from Britain and the government was also attempting to obtain medicine from India, he said. A Sri Lankan medical team arrived in Lahore to assist in controlling the epidemic.

Spraying to kill mosquitoes carrying the disease was being conducted in Lahore and other cities, The Nation reported.
