Serbia urges EU restraint on Kosovo

BELGRADE, Serbia, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- The president of Serbia urged the European Union to back off from any unilateral actions that might upset the current political situation in Kosovo.

Speaking at the Military Academy Saturday, President Boris Tadic said Serbs wanted to put past tensions over Kosovo behind them and find a solution that would allow ethnic Serbs and Albanians to live together peacefully.

Tadic warned that the process was ongoing but was moving gingerly and could be completely derailed by unwise moves by its neighbors. "Serbia does not want conflicts and war, and this is the reason why I need to warn our European partners against the dangerous consequences of any unilateral action that would be aimed at changing the situation in the field," he said.

The Tanjug news agency said Tadic called protecting the rights of Kosovo Serbs and Serbia's membership in the European Union to be top priorities of his government. But, he said, that could only be accomplished if Serbia was prosperous and in good standing with its neighbors.
