Naples, Italy, to host U.N. urban confab

NAPLES, Italy, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A high-level United Nations conference on cities will be hosted next year by Naples, the Italian foreign ministry said.

The World Urban Forum, focusing on sustainable urban development, will take place in September 2012 and is expected to draw some 20,000 attendees, including world leaders, statesmen, businessmen and academics, Italian news agency ANSA reported Friday.

The World Urban Forum was set up to consider rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies.

The United Nations has called uncontrolled urbanization "one of the most pressing problems facing the world today."

Naples will also play host to the Universal Forum of Cultures, a triennial cultural expo sponsored by UNESCO, in 2012, ANSA reported.
