Kurds attack off-duty Turkish police

TUNCELI, Turkey, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- A soccer game between off-duty police officers in Turkey turned deadly when suspected Kurdish militants opened fire on players and spectators, authorities said.

A police officer and his wife were both killed in the attack Sunday in the eastern town of Tunceli and nine other police officers were wounded, officials said.

One of the attackers was killed in the gun battle, CNN reported

The attack came one day after a clash in rural Tunceli province killed two members of the Turkish army.

The conflict between the Kurdistan Workers Party, known as the PKK, representing Turkey's largest ethnic minority, and the Turkish state has worsened in the past month.

The Kurdish separatist movement has claimed responsibility for a number of recent attacks that have killed more than a dozen Turkish soldiers, while Turkish forces say they've killed more than 100 rebels in cross-border attacks against PKK camps in northern Iraq.
