Lebanese general sentenced to two years

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A Lebanese military court has sentenced Brig. Gen. Fayez Karam to two years of hard labor for collaborating with Israel, among other crimes.

Karam, a senior official of the Free Patriotic Movement party, was sentenced Saturday "for collaborating with the enemy pursuant to Article 278," the Lebanese National News Agency reported. His term was reduced from three years by the court.

He was charged in August 2010 for providing information about the FPM, Hezbollah and other Lebanese political parties to Israeli intelligence agency Mossad for monetary gain, The Beirut Daily Star reported. The indictment originally requested Karam be sentenced to 20 years in prison with hard labor.

Fugitive Elias Karam was also sentenced to 10 years of hard labor in prison by the military court chaired by Brig. Gen. Nizar Khalil.
