Hackers create fraudulent certificates

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Hackers may have been able to obtain more than 200 fraudulent digital certificates from the Netherlands company DigiNotar, a security expert says.

Hans Van de Looy, founder of Madison Gurka, a computer security firm, said he received the information from a confidential source, Computerworld reported. He said the security breach appeared to be more serious than DigiNotar acknowledged this week when it put the number of fraudulent certificates created by the hackers at "several dozen."

The certificates were for Mozilla, creator of the Firefox browser, Yahoo and the Tor project, which helps computer users in countries where the government monitors online activities, Van de Looy said. They could be used to set up fake sites where governments could track their citizens.

DigiNotar said it had been able to track and revoke the fraudulent certificates except one for Google.

Google and Mozilla are preparing updates that would block DigiNotar certificates, The Register reported.
