Landslide death toll rises to 24 in Uganda

NAMWIDISI, Uganda, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Twenty-four bodies had been recovered, many more people were missing and homes apparently were buried in landslides in Uganda, authorities said.

Mudslides buried eight families in Namwidisi and Mabono villages Saturday, killing many people, the Daily Monitor reported Monday.

The Uganda Red Cross led rescue crews armed with spades and other implements in a search for survivors and bodies, the report said.

"We have had conflicting figures of the deaths to the level that some people are talking about 36 bodies, others say it is about 24 bodies recovered. But what I know is that about 35 people were buried and we have so far retrieved about 24 bodies -- 14 in Namwidisi while eight are from Buluganya," said one official, Simon Wananzofu.

The landslides were triggered by severe rains in eastern Uganda, New Vision reported.

There were indications that hundreds of homes could have been buried during the slides, officials said.

The Red Cross was conducting an assessment of the widespread damage.
