ULAN-UDE, Russia, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Kim Jong Il, the leader of North Korea who is on a tour of Russia, took a boat ride Tuesday on Lake Baikal, the world's deepest lake.
Kim's day in Ulan-Ude, capital of the Russian Republic of Buryatin also included visits to an area aircraft factory and a resort under construction.
The communist country's leader was scheduled to hold a meeting Wednesday with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, The New York Times reported.
Kim began his trip Saturday in his special armored train, RIA Novosti reported. His trip through Siberia was kept under wraps, although he made a stop Sunday to visit Bureiskaya, the largest power plant in the Russian Far East.
The trip is Kim's first to Russia since 2002.
The Korean Herald, a South Korean newspaper, suggested he hopes to get economic aid for North Korea, which was devastated by the loss of help with the breakup of the Soviet Union and China's turn to free enterprise.
