TORREON, Mexico, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Gunmen attacked a police station in Torreon, in northern Mexico, sending players and spectators at a nearby soccer game running, officials said.
Military troops searched the area and found an abandoned vehicle with a cache of weapons parked near the stadium, CNN reported.
No one at Saturday's game was injured, although information regarding casualties at the police station was not immediately available.
Neither team had scored when the shooting erupted and the match was suspended. Players and referees fled the field and spectators ran from the stadium, officials said.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon took to the Internet and his Twitter account to comment on the violence.
"Shots outside the Santos stadium creates panic in the Santos-Morelia game," Calderon said in a Twitter post. "The situation is under control."
Torreon -- in the state of Coahuila -- has seen a spike in drug cartel violence in recent months. Last week authorities found 10 mutilated bodies in the back of a truck, CNN said.
