Police defuse car bomb in Dagestan

MOSCOW, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A powerful car bomb packed with nails and ball bearings and equivalent of about 200 pounds of dynamite was defused Wednesday, police in Dagestan said.

Police in the south Russian region said the explosive device was in a car parked outside of a shopping area in Khasavyurt, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

A car bomb killed three people in Khasavyurt in January.

RIA Novosti said the volatile Dagestan republic that borders Chechnya experienced about 50 percent of all terrorist attacks in Russia last year.
