Anthrax cases confirmed in China

HAICHENG, China, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Health authorities in China say three people have been confirmed as being infected with anthrax in the country's northeast Liaoning Province.

The provincial health department said another 18 suspected cases are being investigated in the city of Haicheng and in Xiuyan County, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported Thursday.

Local health authorities said it was believed the patients all contracted the disease after coming into direct contact with diseased cattle and have been quarantined for treatment in a hospital in the province.

Anthrax, caused by the bacterium bacillus anthracis, it a potentially fatal disease that can affect both humans and animals.
