LONDON, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A gay asylum seeker got a temporary reprieve from returning to Cameroon after Air France refused to fly him out of Britain, the U.K. Border Agency said.
Joseph Kaute will be allowed out on bail from a U.K. detention center until he can be successfully expelled, Radio France Internationale reported Wednesday.
Gay rights groups have been lobbying Air France not to fly Kaute from London's Heathrow Airport.
Air France's press office told RFI that transporting certain passengers is up to each individual pilot.
Kaute has been fighting to stay in Britain since last year when he told authorities he had been arrested and beaten in the west African nation for being a homosexual.
The Cameroonian government has denied that homosexuals in the country face persecution although homosexuality remains a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison.
