Quake hits Russia's Kuril Islands

SEVERO-KURIL'SK, Russia, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck near Russian's Kuril Islands in the Pacific Ocean Thursday morning, U.S. seismologists said.

The temblor that struck at 9:51 EDT was centered 142 miles south/southwest of Severo-Kuril'sk, about 1100 miles northeast of Tokyo, the U.S. Geological Survey said in a release.

The depth was estimated at about 30 miles, making it a shallow quake, the USGS said.

There were no reports of damage or injuries and no tsunami alert was issued.
