Egyptian police arrest striking workers

ISMAILIA, Egypt, July 26 (UPI) -- Egypt's military arrested 10 workers from at least 80 factories who demonstrated for higher salaries, benefits and a reduction in foreign labor at the sites.

The 10 are from 15,000 leather and textile industry workers in Ismailia who blocked the Ismailia-Cairo road, al-Masry al-Youm of Cairo reported Tuesday.

The newspaper reported military personnel attempted to disperse the demonstrators and reopen the road, but the protesters began to throw stones.

Two military police officers and 36 workers were hurt. Twenty-three people received hospital treatment, the newspaper reported.

The 10 people were being held by the military while an investigation is conducted, the newspaper said.

The arrests came on the second day of a strike during which workers demanded long-term contracts under which they will qualify for benefits, and for the minimum wage to be raised to around $200 per month, the newspaper said.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces said holding civilian trials in military courts is a temporary measure that is necessary during the current political instability in Egypt.
