The 6.2 earthquake was much milder than the 9 magnitude quake that struck Japan in March, causing a tsunami and killing thousands.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred underwater about 49 miles southeast of Sendai, Honshu, and about 59 miles east of Fukushima, Honshu, site of the country's crippled nuclear reactor.
The USGS' National Earthquake Information Center is in Golden, Colo.
