Quake in Kyrgyzstan kills 18 in Uzbekistan

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, July 20 (UPI) -- A 6.2-magnitude earthquake rumbled in Kyrgyzstan Wednesday, killing at least 13 people in neighboring Uzbekistan, officials in Uzbekistan said.

The center of the earthquake -- a little more than a half-mile deep -- was about 18 miles south-southeast of the Fergana region in Uzbekistan, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Uzbekistan Emergency Ministry said the earthquake damaged some buildings in Rishtan, Bagdad and Uzbekistan districts, the state-run Uzbekistan National News Agency said.

Officials said 86 people were injured, of whom 35 were hospitalized.

President Islam Karimov said the government was sending teams to the affected areas to help in the cleanup and provide assistance.
