LONDON, July 19 (UPI) -- Britain's Prince William and Kate, his wife of three months, now have a London flat of their own, sources at Buckingham Palace told the Daily Mail Monday.

The couple chose a "modest" apartment in Kensington Palace, the newspaper said. William and his brother Prince Harry lived in the palace with their mother Lady Diana for some years before her death in 1997.

William is now on active service as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot with the Royal Air Force in Anglesey, Wales. He and Kate spend much of their time in a rented farmhouse there.

They will pay no rent on their London digs.

The couple, formally the duke and duchess of Cambridge, have found palace living can be far from glamorous, the Mail said. They discovered when they brought contractors in to add some modern amenities to the Kensington Palace flat that it had an asbestos problem and dangerously outdated electrical wiring.

Previously, the couple had been using the apartment in Clarence House that had been assigned to William and Harry. But royal sources told the Mail they spent a couple of days last week at their new flat.
