Clinton: U.S. stands with India on terror

NEW DELHI, July 19 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, visiting India Tuesday, pledged solidarity against terrorism and said Pakistan must act against perpetrators.

Clinton condemned last week's triple bombings that killed 19 people and wounded more than 120 in Mumbai, which also was the scene of a bloody terrorist siege in November 2008.

"In the aftermath of the attacks of 2008 in Mumbai, we made it very clear that there was an absolute international responsibility to cooperate to bring the perpetrators to justice. We have made that equally forcefully clear to Pakistan that it has a special obligation to do so transparently, fully, and urgently," Clinton said at a joint news conference in New Delhi with Indian Foreign Minister Shri S.M. Krishna.

She also called Pakistan "a key ally in the fight against terrorism."

Clinton also said, "the United States remains fully committed to expanding civil nuclear cooperation with India," and Krishna warned against a hasty U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan that would let the Taliban take over.

Recalling U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano's May visit that resulted in the U.S.-India Homeland Security Dialogue, Clinton urged: "The events in Mumbai have driven home how important it is that we get results."
