Mexican police find 296-acre pot farm

MEXICO CITY, July 15 (UPI) -- Soldiers found one of the largest marijuana farms in Mexico, just 200 miles south of the U.S.-Mexican border in Baja California, Mexican officials said.

Officials estimated the crop would be worth about $160 million, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The plantation was 296 acres and would yield about 120 metric tons of marijuana, the Mexican Defense Ministry said in a statement Thursday.

Mexico is the world's biggest producer of marijuana, followed by the United States, U.N. data indicated.

The Mexican army called the Baja California plantation's discovery the biggest marijuana farm ever found, saying the field was four times the size of "El Bufalo" ranch in northern Chihuahua state that was raided in 1984. Others, however, said the Bufalo field was far bigger.
