COOMBS, British Columbia, July 10 (UPI) -- Security at an animal sanctuary in Canada has been strengthened after 20 rabbits were brutally killed during a break-in, officials say.
Susan Vickery, owner of the EARS Sanctuary in Coombs, British Columbia, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. she found the rabbits crushed on the property June 15.
"As I crossed the sanctuary, I saw one of my rabbits laying dead, crushed outside the sanctuary gates," she told the CBC, adding she then discovered more dead rabbits in six of the seven outbuildings on the refuge.
Vickery said she waited to tell the media about the break-in until the new security measures -- including an alarm system, infrared-capable security cameras and a person to live on the grounds -- were in place.
"I can't even approach the motivation for that kind of act. It's frightening. It's monstrous," Vickery said.
