SANAA, Yemen, July 7 (UPI) -- Militants shot and killed 10 soldiers at a military checkpoint in southwestern Yemen, officials said.
The incident occurred Wednesday in Lawdar, CNN reported Thursday.
In a separate incident Wednesday, the country's Defense Ministry said al-Qaida commander Waleed Osairi and several other suspected al-Qaida followers were killed.
The militants' deaths in Abyan province is part of an operation to clear the area of the terror group, the government said.
