GAZA, July 7 (UPI) -- An Israeli soldier was wounded when a bomb exploded near a tank in Gaza Thursday in the first significant attack in the area in months, officials said.

Israeli military officials said the soldier was wounded slightly by shrapnel and the tank was not damaged, Haaretz reported.

After an extended period of relative calm, the strip has witnessed an uptick in attacks, Haaretz said. Earlier this week Israel planes attacked a Palestinian cell Israeli officials said planned to fire rockets from Gaza to Israel. Palestinian sources said two people died in the operation.

Ynetnews.com said officials initially believed Palestinians fired an anti-tank missile at the troops in Thursday's incident.

Palestinian sources said bulldozers and tanks entered the strip near Khan Younis and Israeli troops fired at residents' homes, Ynetnews.com said.

Israeli military officials said weapons were fired in response to rocket fire.
