MADRID, July 6 (UPI) -- A Spanish political party accused First Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba of abuse of power and demanded his resignation.
A representative of the People's Party, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, said Rubalcaba used his position to further personal interests, RTVE reported Wednesday.
The opposition party said Rubalcaba, who also holds the title of vice president, used his position to draw up a number of contracts with election organizers.
Santamaria accused the deputy prime minister of being "arbitrary, glaringly incompatible and abusing power" in his position within the Interior Ministry.
Rubalcaba, who was elected in 2006, said the conservative party's only proposal since he has been in office is a request for resignation.
He said he has no intention to resign from the ruling government, led by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.
