Iran begins shelling anew inside Iraq

ERBIL, Iraq, June 29 (UPI) -- Iranian shelling in the Hajj Omran border district in Erbil, Iraq, caused no casualties, officials said.

"Iranian shelling resumed on Tuesday night and lasted for hours without leading to any casualties as raids targeted uninhabitable regions," Maghdid Arif Ahmad, head of Hajj Omran District, told al-Sumaria news.

A week into the shelling, residents said they worried it would bring instability to the region and damage crops on farms, leading to big losses.

The new raids follow armed confrontations late Monday between Iranian Forces and members of a group affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers Party near the Iraqi Wiza village, 4 kilometers from Iran's border, witnesses said.

Iranian army vehicles had been opening roads inside the territory when the fighting began, al-Sumaria reported.

Attacks Sunday and Monday killed 12 people, authorities said.
