Canadian teen charged in cop's death

NEWMARKET, Ontario, June 29 (UPI) -- A Canadian teenager faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of a police officer who was dragged and pinned underneath a minivan, authorities say.

The 15-year-old boy, who remained in serious condition, was charged Tuesday night at the hospital where he is being treated, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. The report did not specify how the suspect was injured.

The youth is charged in the Tuesday death of Constable Garrett Styles, who was killed while making a traffic stop on a rural highway near Newmarket, Ontario. Styles was dragged for several hundred feet and then pinned underneath the vehicle when it flipped, the CBC said.

The suspect was one of four youths in the vehicle. Citing a police source, the Toronto Star said the minivan had been taken without permission from a family member.

The 15-year-old was hospitalized Tuesday with spinal injuries that may result in paralysis, the newspaper said. The other occupants of the minivan were cooperating with investigators, police said.

Styles, who would have turned 33 Sunday, was married to a civilian police employee, Melissa, and the couple had a 2 1/2-year-old daughter and a 9-week-old son.
