TEHRAN, June 28 (UPI) -- The commander of Iran's aerospace force Tuesday warned that Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East are within range of Iranian missiles.
"The range of our missiles has been designed based on American bases in the region as well as the Zionist regime," The Tehran Times quoted Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the head of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Aerospace Force, as saying.
Iran announced earlier Tuesday it had successfully fired 14 surface-to-surface missiles on the second day of its Great Prophet 6 military drills.
Hajizadeh said, "We can hit it (Israel) from Damghan or Semnan with our missiles."
The Israeli border is 745 miles from Iran and U.S. bases in Afghanistan are within their 1,242 mile (2,000 kilometer) range, but not Europe. Hajizadeh said Iran had the technological capability to build longer-range ballistic missiles but had chosen not to.
"Our extra-regional enemies are the U.S. and the Zionist regime and we do not feel a threat from any other country, thus we do not need missiles with a range longer than 2,000 kilometers," he told reporters in Tehran.
Five Shahab missiles and nine Zelzal missiles were test fired, Iran's Press TV reported.
Iran Monday unveiled underground missile silos that Gen. Asghar Qelich-Khani said were part of the swift reaction units of Iran's missile forces.
The general said the missiles were ready to be launched against pre-determined targets.
