Trial of former Egyptian official delayed

CAIRO, June 26 (UPI) -- The trial of former Egyptian Interior Minister Habib el-Adly for his alleged role in the death of protesters has been delayed for a month, officials said.

El-Adly was sentenced last month to 12 years in prison for corruption, but could be sentenced to death if found guilty of ordering security forces to kill protesters in the Jan. 25 revolution, al-Masry al-Youm reported Sunday.

The trial was rescheduled for July 25. The report didn't say why the trial was postponed, but news it was rescheduled angered the hundreds of demonstrators waiting outside the courthouse in Cairo, al-Masry al-Youm said.

Some of the demonstrators tossed rocks at security forces outside the courthouse.

The trial of six high-ranking police officers in Alexandria also has been delayed. That trial will now is scheduled for October.

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is set to go on trial Aug. 3 on corruption charges and ordering the killing of protesters.
