Anti-circumcision stand leads to firing

LONDON, June 26 (UPI) -- A Jewish official in London was fired for publicly criticizing the practice of circumcision.

Rebecca Steinfeld, an Oxford University student and member of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, called circumcision "male genital mutilation," The Jerusalem Post reported Saturday. In an op-ed piece in The Guardian, she suggested that Jews who oppose female circumcision should be equally opposed to the practice for men.

The New West End Synagogue in London confirmed that she had been removed as its Under-35 Observers on the board, the Post said. Under-35 Observers were introduced recently to get young people more involved.

Steinfeld is also a member of Jews for Justice, a group critical of Israeli policy towards the Palestinians.
