JERUSALEM, June 23 (UPI) -- At Israel's request, Apple Inc. removed an application called "The Third Palestinian Intifada" from its App Store for iPads and iPhones, CNN reported.

"We removed this app from the APP Store because it violates the developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people," CNN said, quoting a statement released by the computer giant.

The move came a day after Israel's Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs Minister Yuli Edelstein sent a letter to Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, requesting the company remove the application that provided information on protests planned against Israel, The Jerusalem Post said.

"I believe Apple, as a pioneering and progressive company, places the values of liberty, freedom of expression and creativity as a guiding light. Also, as a leader in its area, I am convinced that you are aware of this type of application's ability to unite many toward an objective that could be disastrous," the Post said, quoting Edelstein's letter.

The letter followed a successful Israeli government campaign last month that led to the removal of a Facebook page with the same name.

Intifada is an Arab word that refers to the popular uprising or resistance by the Palestinians protesting Israel's presence in Arab territory.
