Tension high after riots in Xintang, China

XINTANG, China, June 18 (UPI) -- Tension remained high Saturday in Xintang, China, after three days of rioting by migrant workers, CNN reported.

Police and guards were patrolling the busy streets in Xintang, manning checkpoints to question some drivers, CNN reported, days after the three days of riots that began June 10, which began after two street vendors had an argument with city officials.

Authorities said 19 people were arrested out of hundreds of "trouble makers."

Xintang is a predominantly industrial town of 400,000 people that makes almost half of the jeans sold in the United States, CNN said. Nearly half of the town's citizens are migrant workers, and like most of China, there is a slowdown in economic growth.

"Factories are not getting enough orders," said Tan Zhijian, 33, who has worked in clothing factories in Xintang for 17 years. "Many owners owe workers back pay. Some just run away."
