Pakistan captures tribal region stronghold

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 19 (UPI) -- Pakistani military officials said Sunday its forces killed 25 militants in an operation in the northwest tribal area and were mopping up scattered enemy forces.

The two-day foray in Mohmand Agency was a joint operation that included police, air force and the border Frontier Corps as well as the army.

"Presently troops are consolidating their positions in the area and search operation for remnants is in progress," the army said in a written statement. "The operation also had full support of people of Mohmand Agency."

China's Xinhua news agency said the operation specifically targeted a militant redoubt known as Walidad, and the retreating enemy forces were heading back into Afghanistan.
