Female FARC fighters allege sexual abuse

BOGOTA, June 13 (UPI) -- A Colombian police report claims to shed light on the sexually abusive treatment of women fighters within the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

Documents seized in army operations against the rebel group, better known by its Spanish acronym FARC, have detailed forced sexual obligations, abortions and the spread of sexual diseases, El Tiempo reported Monday.

Testimony by 112 women who had deserted the guerrilla organization alleged they had been sexually abused, with 90 percent saying they were forced to have at least one abortion.

About half of the women said they were forced to give away their child after giving birth in the jungle.

Girls ages 13 to 15 are targeted for recruitment by FARC in order to fulfill a quota to maintain the discipline of male soldiers, the report stated.
