Colombian police closing in on kidnappers

BOGOTA, June 13 (UPI) -- Colombian police are closer to rescuing four Chinese oil workers suspected of being abducted by Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, officials said.

Colombia's army commander, Gen. Alejandro Navas, said forces were closing in around the area where the men were kidnapped by FARC -- the group's Spanish acronym -- in San Vicente del Caguan last week, El Espectador reported Monday.

"In the coming days we can say there is good news, given the advances in the operations in the area," Navas said.

Colombian security forces have been looking for the hostages since last Wednesday when a group of armed men blocked the road and kidnapped them in the southern department of Caqueta.

The kidnappers are allegedly members of the FARC military and abducted the workers in order to collect ransom payments, police said.

Colombia's national police Friday arrested the FARC leader allegedly responsible for the kidnappings.

The four Sinochem employees were being contracted by British oil company Emerald Energy.
