Alleged plot against Mafia fighter busted

COSENZA, Italy, June 10 (UPI) -- Eleven gangsters allegedly plotting to kill an anti-Mafia prosecutor have been arrested, police in southern Italy said Friday.

Authorities allege the suspects were planning the assassination of Vincenzo Luberto in Catanzaro on behalf of the 'Ndrangheta, the Calabrian crime syndicate, ANSA reported. The arrests focused on the province of Cosenza.

Luberto has sent several mobsters to prison for long terms since 2004 and has been the target of threats and intimidation.

In 2007, thieves broke into his garage, vandalized it, scrawled threats on the walls and stole his car.

Nicola Gratteri, assistant anti-Mafia prosecutor in Reggio Calabria, called Friday for closer coordination among state institutions to combat organized crime.
