The report, quoting authorities, said the truck apparently went out of control.

The pilgrims, traveling on foot to a shrine in Bahdiyad, had stopped on the roadside to rest for the night when the truck hit them. The Times of India reported the truck was speeding and struck the pilgrims as they were sleeping.

Many of those killed died at the scene. The report said at least 15 people were admitted to a hospital.

Rescue efforts were under way, authorities said. Other details of the incident were not immediately available, but police warned the death toll could rise.
