Venezuela requests extradition to Colombia

CARACAS, Venezuela, June 3 (UPI) -- The Venezuelan president said he is complying with his responsibility of extraditing guerrilla fighters wanted by Colombia, officials said.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said he will begin the process to extradite alleged former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia leader Guillermo Enrique Torres, El Espectador reported Friday.

Torres was captured Thursday in Venezuela by a joint operation between Venezuelan and Colombian authorities.

Chavez said he is confident the promise of an extradition request by Venezuelan officials of Walid Makled Garcia to Colombia would be fulfilled based on international accords.

"I am certain that conspiracies against Venezuela will not be permitted in Colombian territory," said Chavez.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said in April he would extradite alleged drug lord Makled Garcia to Venezuela.

Makled is wanted on drug-trafficking charges in Colombia.
