Chilean officials look into Neruda's death

Judge Mario Carroza ordered the investigation Thursday stating police, witness and medical records would be examined, La Tercera reported.

Officials with the country's Communist Party asked officials to probe Neruda's death after reports in local media differed from descriptions on his death certificate.

"We are not accusing anybody. What we want is that the courts to fully clarify the situation," said Communist Party President Guillermo Teillier.

The Nobel Prize-winning poet's death certificate says he died of prostate cancer.

The investigation into Neruda's death comes as Chilean authorities probe the death of former Chilean President Salvador Allende.

Neruda, a member of Chile's Communist Party, died September 23, 1973.
