Saudi police free woman taped driving

AL-KHOBAR, Saudi Arabia, May 30 (UPI) -- Saudi police Monday freed a woman arrested after posting a video of herself driving.

Manal al-Sharif, 32, was arrested May 21 while driving in al-Khobar, in Saudi Arabia's oil-rich Eastern province. The day before, she had posted the video on YouTube.

Al-Sharif's lawyer, Adnan al-Saleh, told Arab News Monday her release had been ordered though he was not sure she was out of jail yet.

Prince Ahmad, the deputy minister of the interior, reaffirmed the ban on driving by women last week.

"A statement was issued in 1990 prohibiting women from driving cars in the kingdom. The Ministry of Interior's task is to implement an order. It is not our job to say something is right or wrong," he said.
