OTTAWA, May 25 (UPI) -- Nearly 80 percent of Canadians had home Internet access in 2010, with the highest usage reported among higher income-earners, Statistics Canada said Wednesday.
Overall, Internet usage was highest at 81 percent in metropolitan areas, compared with 71 percent elsewhere, the report said.
By income, 97 percent of households whose gross pay was above $87,000 had home Web access, while at the lowest end of the scale, just 54 percent of those earning less than $30,000 had it, StatsCan said.
Household size and composition also affected the Internet access numbers.
"In 2010, 93 percent of households with three or more people, as well as those with at least one member under the age of 18, had home Internet access," the report said. "By contrast, 58 percent of one-person households had home Internet access."
Among the 21 percent of homes without Web access, 56 percent reported they had no need for it or no interest in it, the report said.
