LONDON, May 25 (UPI) -- Iceland's Grimsvotn volcano stopped spewing ash Wednesday morning, observers said as the cloud closed German airports.

Icelandic meteorologist Hrafn Gudmundsson told Britain's Daily Telegraph: "There are indications that it's ceasing. There's no plume detected since 0300 GMT [11 p.m. EDT Sunday], and the last plume was around 0210. Since then there seems to be mainly steam coming from the crater."

"This is certainly a better situation than we had a few days ago," he added. "Although seismic activity has decreased it is still going on so it is impossible to say if it will happen again.

Meanwhile, airports in Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen were closed Wednesday morning as the ash cloud from Iceland blew over northern Germany.

The air traffic control agency said the restrictions "could, depending on the weather situation, be lifted in the course of the day," The New York Times reported.

The busy Frankfurt airport was still open so far, but the cloud was heading for Poland, said Eurocontrol, the Brussels agency that coordinates air traffic across the region.

Flights were expected to resume at airports in northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the BBC reported.
