Germany has outbreak of E. coli

FRANKFURT, Germany, May 24 (UPI) -- Public health officials in Germany say they're searching for the source of an outbreak of E.coli which has killed two people and made at least 300 others sick.

Ten victims have been hospitalized in Frankfurt, four of them in intensive care, and several other cities have reported cases, Euronews.net reported Tuesday.

"This is not a new intestinal germ but what is exceptional is the relatively huge number of cases which have lead to severe illness," Reinhard Burger of the Robert-Koch Institute said.

Most of those afflicted are adult women, and experts believe uncooked vegetables may have helped spread the outbreak among women preparing food for their families.

Symptoms of E.coli include stomach cramps and diarrhea and in some cases it can lead to kidney failure.
