Pakistan military base attacked

KARACHI, Pakistan, May 23 (UPI) -- Militants attacked a major naval and air force base in Pakistan overnight and the battle raged into Monday, officials said.

The Express Tribune, a Pakistani newspaper, reported at least five military personnel had been killed in the fighting at the military base in Karachi that lasted at least 5 hours. The newspaper said an official speaking on condition of anonymity said at least four or five militants had been killed.

The Chinese news agency Xinhua, quoting local Urdu TV channel ARY, said at least nine people had died, including three Pakistani troops and six militants. The fighting started about 10:30 p.m., Xinhua said.

The Express Tribune said up to 15 terrorists participated in the attack, which included multiple explosions at the PAF Museum and produced huge fires at the PNS Mehran compound.
