BAGHDAD, May 22 (UPI) -- Iraqi authorities said at least 18 people were killed Sunday in a terrorist bombing spree in Baghdad.
Another 80 people were injured in the blasts, which occurred in a matter of hours on the same day Great Britain officially concluded its military mission in Iraq.
Officials said the string of roadside and car bombs appeared to have a wide range of targets, including Iraqi and U.S. security forces and both Shiite and Sunni neighborhoods, CNN said.
The deadliest attack was a car bomb that evidently targeted a U.S. military convoy, The New York Times said. The initial attack did little damage, but a secondary bomb went off as Iraqi security forces converged on the scene, killing seven people and injuring 10 others.
Some Iraqis took note of the British withdrawal and suspected the Americans were behind the attacks.
"The want to prove that Iraq is still an unstable country so they can stay longer," one truck driver told CNN.
Other Baghdad residents scoffed at the idea, blaming al-Qaida for the bombs and the Iraqi military for not stopping them.
